According to Buddhist legend, Guanyin Bodhisattva was once Princess Diệu Thiện, a woman of profound compassion who devoted herself to helping all living beings.
Her father, King Diệu Trang Vương, did not understand her spiritual path and ordered her death.
After descending to the underworld, she vowed to guide the departed and was granted a return to the mortal world. Years later, the king fell gravely ill. He was told that only the hands and eyes of a person completely free from hatred could cure him. When he discovered that the compassionate woman was his own daughter, Diệu Thiện, she bore no resentment for her past suffering. Out of love for her father, she willingly offered her own eyes and hands to save him. Deeply remorseful, the king prayed from the bottom of his heart for his daughter to be restored.
Moved by her boundless compassion and selfless devotion, Heaven and Buddha answered his heartfelt prayer. From the places where her hands and eyes had been lost, countless arms and eyes emerged, giving rise to the sacred image of Guanyin with a Thousand Arms and a Thousand Eyes- a symbol of boundless compassion and the power to protect and help all beings.
